Printing originated in China aroudn 220 Ad as a method of applying designs to textiles and later directly onto paper. These were predominantly woodblock prints where the design was carved out first. Different coloured inks were then applied to the blocks for transfer onto the desired material. As printing developed over the years print framing became a fashion, so the results could be displayed on the walls. The process accelerated in Europe with the development of the Gutenberg printing press in 1450’s Germany.

Later, printing framing techniques developed so that prints of famous artworks could be sold, adding a huge commercial element to process This allowed the artist to sell many more copies of the original design, for a much lower cost. Picasso was one of the first artists to take advantage with one of his first runs selling for nearly £2m! Other artists’ prints have become hugely collectable with signed editions from the likes of Lowry going for thousands of pounds.

Photo framing was a natural extension of the printing process. Some of the world’s top photographers have earned huge sums from limited edition runs of their most iconic photos. Whilst much of this process has been superseded by the explosion of mobile phone cameras and photo sharing apps, there is still a place for a framed photo of a loved one, be it human, canine, or feline!
